I haven’t posted anything on tumblr for a long time, so obviously the sole purpose of this post is to shove my first study abroad experience down your throats in excruciating detail. Just kidding (más o menos). This is more for my own future reference than anything. I still refer back to my tumblr posts about Japan from three years ago because I’m a nostalgic ass motherfucker.
I arrived in Buenos Aires on Saturday morning. My housing situation is this hybrid of a shared house and a homestay; there are 13 students living in a house, and we have a host mama that cooks for us and loves us. It’s basically the best of both worlds. I got there pretty early in the morning, so I had the whole day to explore. Most people in my situation would’ve at least taken a nap after enduring a 17 hour flight (including the time between my connecting flights) without having slept in the plane at all, but I guess I’m not most people. I jumped straight in and went with my roommates to a street in Palermo with a bunch of designer outlet shops, then a market in Recoleta. The outlet shops were mostly European brands that I’d never heard of, with cool and unique footwear that I couldn’t stop drooling over. The market in Recoleta was a flea market type of deal with vendors selling traditional Argentinian stuff, as well as funky modern goods.
By the end of the day I had been awake for 32 hours. Time to call it a night, right? Wait jk it’s Saturday. I went with my roommate Andrew to a party because hey why not. At around 3 am the party was over so we went home WAIT JUST KIDDING WE’RE IN BUENOS AIRES 3 AM IS STILL EARLY LET’S GO TO A CLUB. At 4 am people were still lining up to get into clubs like wtf don’t you guys have families to feed? I learned that it’s common for Porteños to start drinking around midnight, then go to clubs around 4 am, then go home at 8 am. Anyway, we went home at 6 am, by which point I had been awake for about 40 hours. I recall posting on Facebook about being awake for 30 hours, but that was a miscalculation. It was 40 fucking hours. I did go to EDC the week before, so maybe my body was conditioned to rage.
I actually woke up after only 7 hours the next day… you’d expect me to sleep all day, right? Anyway, since I was up at a reasonable hour, I went with my roommates to the Sunday market in San Telmo. Oh man, the Recoleta market was just a warm-up to this… This was a never-ending strip of cool booths, street performers, food vendors, and a ton of people. Basically, everything I love.
Today was the first day of class. I was nervous about finding my school because none of my roommates go to the same school as I do, so baby Téa had nobody to depend on and had to put her big girl pants on. It was actually relatively easy to find, and I even ended up giving other people directions. Apparently (not to toot my own horn oh wait jk I’m totally about to) my pronunciation is pretty good, so it leads people to believe that 1) I actually speak Spanish 2) I know where I’m going. Obviously, neither is the case. I’ve been told several times since I’ve gotten here that it sounds like I’ve been studying Spanish for a while. How did these people know that I enjoy getting compliments I don’t deserve??
There was also a “Girls Night” event with the program that I’m in, so we got awesome nail art on our nails! We were only allowed to get relatively simple designs today, but I’m definitely planning on going back and getting something funkier. The nail place is cheap ($8 for rad nail art) and only about a 5 minute walk from my house.
Let it be known that Buenos Aires is fucking beautiful. Way more so than I expected, and I already had high expectations. Aside from the fun tourist destinations, the neighborhoods, streets, and houses are all really rad. The nightlife is fantastic; not just for its liveliness, but for the abundance of cool bars and clubs. Unfortunately, my iphone cannot capture its beauty in all its glory, but trust me when I say that it’s definitely way underrated.
I know what you’re thinking - if she’s already written this Great Wall of Text after only 3 days, how much more of this shit is she going to post? Hey you know what fuck off.
